What a Beach!

by Kaoly - 02. July 127 commentaries

You’ve always known that you had the heart of a great landscape artist, but never had the chance to bring forth that talent? Now’s the time to show us what you’re made of! Create a beautiful sandy shore and see your map integrated in-game!

But how does it work?

The principle is simple: with an isometric grid (your creation space) and a few pictograms (representing sand, water, different rocks and vegetation, etc.) You will be able to ‘build’ a beach, a bit like playing with construction blocks!

To do this, simply use your favourite advanced image editing software, and assemble the pictograms! You can also add elements of your own creation.

For those of you who are not familiar with map construction, you can find a mini-tutorial explaining it here, which will show you how to create a basic map, and even a beach in this particular case!

Are there constraints?

Of course there are, it wouldn’t be much fun otherwise! Rest assured though, there aren’t that many:

  • The beach mustn’t be bigger than the grid we’ve provided for you - Note that you do not need to use the entire surface. Please take into account that it will be integrated into a much larger space.
  • Your participation must be sent to kaoly (at) ankama.com, with the title "[contest] What a Beach!", in jpeg format please. Feel free to attach a small text explaining your thoughts and intentions.
  • Only one entry per person.
  • Remember to provide the name of your Ankama account

And what are the rewards, you wonder?

In addition to receiving a unique ‘Landscaper of the year’ title and exclusive forum avatar, the winner will see his creation added in-game! The winner will be chosen by an impartial and incorruptible jury (unless you can send us some really amazing homemade chocolates that give magical abilities! ^^) made up of Poolay, Fhenris, Pixcraft, Zidrune and Kaoly.

One more for the road: when does it end?

You will have until August 1st at midnight to send us your creations. The jury will then deliberate for approximately 2 weeks before selecting and announcing the winner.

The winning entry will be incorporated in an upcoming patch, in the near or far future, when new maps will be added.

Download the beach creation kit.

Well, now you have everything you need. Best of luck to all of you! We can’t wait to see your awesome creations.

At first i thought this looked like a dull contest, but i started thinking beaches can be more then a desert with water tongue.gif
By Manyfaces 02.July.2010 - 16:12
**stupid question**

the "(at)" is an @ ??

Other Question do we send with or without the grid?
By microundeas 02.July.2010 - 19:21
Do we have to use fit it within that pre-made grid/square image, or can we make it longer/wider?

By microundeas 03.July.2010 - 18:38
"landscape artist"
you mean
"ditch digger"

meh, entering anyway. I hope you guys give beta access, I have lots of friends wanting to join.
By cyberforce-tg 04.July.2010 - 17:49
Do the people who gave us the kit know that all the squares for water and sand don't fit in the grid?

You should see my map now.... where i started the grid looks perfect with the ground but the farther i went the more the grid fall outs of place
By EbilAndrex 04.July.2010 - 19:57
lool mine is fine....

By microundeas 04.July.2010 - 20:03
Woohoo done mine! It was really fun making a concept more people should do it too!
By EbilAndrex 05.July.2010 - 05:12

Indeed, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to win! wink.gif
By Kaoly 06.July.2010 - 14:25
maybe if you up the ante you will get more effort from participants
say 150 character points for the winner... man, you're gonna get some mona lisa's if you offer a prize like that
By cyberforce-tg 06.July.2010 - 21:16
Will we be able to ask for what the judges thought of are projects?
By Manyfaces 07.July.2010 - 03:36
that im gonna have to doubt. HARD.
By cyberforce-tg 07.July.2010 - 08:18
why do u doubt that? they did for the last contest
By Manyfaces 07.July.2010 - 09:29
ya true but this time the contest is for all the community but still we can hope wink.gif
By microundeas 07.July.2010 - 19:45
Can we add personal elements? Nothing too fancy.
erm... rather, can we tweak elements that have been provided to us or does everything have to be 'stock' so to speak?
By RifRaff 08.July.2010 - 05:08
QUOTE (pixcraft @ 2 Jul 2010, 09:39) *
This is just an example - you can change the size to make it bigger or smaller, and even draw and add elements of your own creation.

By Oamoka 08.July.2010 - 07:09
Hey ;D
I am deciding to give this a go! I just have a question that I sorta of have answered I just want to be sure.

#1: i read in these comments that we get closed beta access JUST for entering this. True/False?

Thanks, and glad to see you again Kaoly biggrin.gif
By Demodude 09.July.2010 - 04:41

Ok, well I am about to send mine to Miss Kaoly,
Two last questions,

#1: Do you want the grid in the picture?
#2: Do we get beta access when Kaoly sees our entry, or after this whole contest? Just curious

Thanks Mate ^^ May the best man/woman win!
By Demodude 09.July.2010 - 18:54
1. dunno i already ask it but no one answer me.. :'(

2. not sure but i think that is only after the contest end...

Hey another contest! Maybe I could win myself acces if I win......Ah, to bad I suck hard time at anything that has something to do with art.

Art is overrated, peace out....

EDIT: Oh, acces for all entries? Sweet Jesus! Expect something decent-to-crummy from me tongue.gif

EDIT2: Oh noes! This is way to complicated for me sad.gif

I wish there was some easier contest, sigh.....
By dommex 10.July.2010 - 11:48

Did you look at Pixcraft's tutorial? It should make things easier! =)

Kaoly
By Kaoly 10.July.2010 - 16:03
they should make a contest were you create a monster family i mean we have already made sets and a landscape
By beepbeepimajeep 11.July.2010 - 03:18
It still hard after seen the tutorial Kaoly especially if you have no experience with this type of software . I would recommend that it would have a tutorial for the program pixcraft suggested.
By Urnes 11.July.2010 - 03:42
Well this is a contest of skill... No contest will ever be fair too all tongue.gif
For example, the story contest "Gobbowl World Cup". I am a HORRIBLE writer (i still tried to win ;D) so I have a disadvantage.
Same goes for "Drawing/Art" contests, a lot of people are not good at art. So obviously, the people with better art skills will stand out.

Luckily I have experience with a different program that works just as good as Photoshop and is even better than Paint tongue.gif (GIMP)
So I think I have a better chance at this than any other contest.

In short, one contest type will let some people SHINE, while others fail.

I hope I made sense smile.gif

By Demodude 11.July.2010 - 06:58
Sorry but how do we get our entries to Kaoly?
By bllarghh 11.July.2010 - 17:40
IF you are done with your entry, make sure it is saved as "filename.jpg"
Once you have saved it as a .jpg, open up your e-mail. (Preferably the one linked to your account)
When your e-mail is open, create a new blank e-mail. Attach you .jpg file of your entry to the e-mail.
And then send it too "kaoly@ankama.com" you are able to write a little bit about your map in the map if you feel the need to!

Now, I asked Kaoly if we needed to show the grid in the picture.
Her answer, "It would be best if you showed both pictures, non-grid and grid. However, if you can only send one, the Non-Grid picture would be best"

Later,

Well... After taking a while to think about this, I have come to a conclusion.
I have sent in my entry already, and I have no regrets ^^ I am perfectly happy with how i did. SO!! What is a contest when you can not admire the work of others?

I hope others do not take the easy route and copy me but hey... if they like it that much it makes me proud smile.gif

By microundeas 13.July.2010 - 14:56
Very cool! Thanks for sharing ^^
i like both of your's but the 2nd was the best in my opinion:)

-Edit:
Question... Why do we get so long to do this? ~2 more weeks for people to do this. It is not like it takes a week (+) to make a map.
And I am not saying RUSH it. I took my time on mine. Mine took a good 2-4 days, I added stuff, i deleted stuff, and then I asked Dofus friends for help.
I was just curious about that, since the Fashion contest that just started ends tomorrow. Thanks !!
By Demodude 13.July.2010 - 16:59
hum... Nice question
May be they will add the next patch soon so that the fashion contest must be fast tongue.gif (or not)
By microundeas 13.July.2010 - 20:12
Well, the fashion contest is pretty much 'take a screenshot of your character in your favourite gear', whereas the map-making contest involves skill, creativity and some degree of patience and concentration. Sure, some people might be able to knock out a decent looking map in a few hours; for others it'll be a learning curve, a more complex and difficult endeavour - and some people might like to enter but not have the time just now. Also, the fashion contest is for people who already have their beta access; the beach contest is probably longer so that it gives more people time to enter and get beta access (like me! biggrin.gif).

Haha, me either - my partner and I both play Dofus together; he happened to try out Wakfu during the time that granted automatic access into the beta testing and for some reason I didn't download it and log in at the same time - so he's got beta access and currently I don't :/

I loved your map by the way - great work with the smooth curves!

Thanks ^^
Also, I did play Wakfu for a bit before the deadline the had.
I stopped playing because the graphics just were messed up for me... They were flashing everywhere so I just stopped.
So I thought I deleted all my chars, but I know how CBT access 0.o

One of two things happened xD

#1 Kaoly activated me :3
#2 I had a character left over.

Anyways, i did asked Kaoly a few questions and one was about CBT,

She said that she is trying to give out CBT too all that enter, but she is only able to give CBT access at her work. Not at home. So it just might take some time ^^

Good Luck Dely, let me know if you get access!
(If you want have your partner add me, Krew)

Ah - I'll content myself with Dofus for now and watching the other half playing Wakfu. biggrin.gif (Don't think he's settled on a character yet but as soon as I get on there I'll add ya.)

Here's my beach!

By Delyberry 13.July.2010 - 21:22
Darnit i want to enter this but I have no experience what-so ever about how to use those programs.....

>:(
By variarria 13.July.2010 - 23:27
I'm not an expert to and i did it... you just have to play with the layers. But of course you have to spend sometime in the begging to understand for your self how it really work ^__^
By microundeas 13.July.2010 - 23:31
Variarria, you'll pretty much be copying the tiles from the pack they provide, and pasting them on top of the grid that's also in the pack, and arranging them so they all line up nicely smile.gif It's kinda weird getting your head around isometric mapping if you've never done it before, but if you have a play with it, it'll get easier. I did mine in Photoshop CS3 but GIMP works perfectly well. Open the grid, and then start with say one of the sand images - select all, copy, and paste it on to your grid. Then drag it to where you want it to start building the sandy section of your beach (I found it easier to start in the top right and work my way to the left row by row, because of the way the tiles are facing). Then paste it again, and drag it alongside your first tile so that it lines up. Every layer you paste will be 'on top' of the last one (you can drag the layers up and down to change the order), so you're building from background to foreground.

I strongly encourage you to just download the Beach Creation Kit and have a play with it. If you don't have any software to build it in, you can get GIMP for free - http://www.gimp.org/

Or just send it.

I have a question!

I've submitted one high-quality beach to Ankama.

When will those who participated in the contest get into Closed Beta? Around the time the contest is over, August 1st-ish, or not until 2 weeks later, when the judging for the best beach is complete?
By ZareidrieI 17.July.2010 - 12:57
I got in when Create-a-Set closed, not when the results were announced, so you should be able to play when What a Beach! closes.

I have stated the answer to this question before in my other posts....

In the pack, in the sand_ground folder, 17321.png - layer that, either as it is, or flip it horizontally if you want it to go in the other direction smile.gif

I feel really bad about mine now... My excuse is that I went the simplistic route and made up a cool story about mine. That this area may be some rogue remains of a certain island from Dofus times, figure it out. (And I thought we were supposed to keep to the dimensions given, and not extend out of the picture?)

So I just discovered this topic and I desperately want beta access, so I am trying to make a beach, but I have no idea how the hell to use paint.net . I got layering to work, but I must be missing something completely obvious because the "transparent" portions of the sand images overlap each other when I put them in the grid spots. I tried converting to a png file in case the overlaps go away in the real picture, but they don't.

Anyone know what I need to do to stop that from happening?

you have to play with the layers: put a block create other layer then put other block, mix the layers, then create other layer, put other block, etc etc etc....
in the beginning you can only put one block per layer but when we start to "walk" to 2 direction we are able to add more blocks per layer....
By microundeas 22.July.2010 - 22:46
I don't know about Paint.Net, but for Gimp/Photoshop/etc, you need to make sure there's Alpha-transparency for the image, and the basic layer otherwise when you cut&paste you "pick up" the background at the same time. The provided grid image has that enabled.

Normal MS Paint has a setting to ignore the set background colour (effectively treats it as transparent) when cut&pasting.

Or you can just paste "in front" each time... you only need layers if you slip up in the order (because you can't just past "behind"), or you want to keep water in a different layer from sand so it's easier to handle/redo/etc.

Entry to the competition is NOT done through posting in this thread. You need to send to image by email to Kaoly.

As for posting dynamic images, you need to work out the direct url of the picture, rather than the script url. Bring up the picture where ever you have uploaded it, right-click it and you should be able to see the full location via one of the options on that menu.
By [Knonaut] 27.July.2010 - 15:15
To link it on the forum you'll need to upload your pic to a hosting site that gives you a static URL for your photo; where are you hosting it? Most sites give you the direct URL to your pic for linking somewhere on the same page as viewing the pic itself.

so, i sent my beach a about a week ago...am i suppose to get a confirmation mail back? :[
By Xanil 28.July.2010 - 22:39
No, there is no confirmation e-mail.
By Demodude 29.July.2010 - 01:07
oh god... where did u get that ship demondude? xD
mine looks kinda.... you know... shipless? haha xD
By mussepige 30.July.2010 - 15:05
IF you are done with your entry, make sure it is saved as "filename.jpg"
Once you have saved it as a .jpg, open up your e-mail. (Preferably the one linked to your account)
When your e-mail is open, create a new blank e-mail. Attach you .jpg file of your entry to the e-mail.
And then send it too "kaoly(a)ankama.com" (replace (a) with @) you are able to write a little bit about your map in the map if you feel the need to!

Now, I asked Kaoly if we needed to show the grid in the picture.
Her answer, "It would be best if you showed both pictures, non-grid and grid. However, if you can only send one, the Non-Grid picture would be best"

well i have a question smile.gif
i send a picture in with the non-grid and with grid^^
but should you write your username and password or is it okay if you just send your contest entry over email? smile.gif

you just have to say your account name, in you case "mussepige" wink.gif
By microundeas 30.July.2010 - 16:31
micro, when you say "mussepige" aren't you reffering to her forum name/nickname, doesn't account name mean your ankama account? just clarifying
By speedrunner 30.July.2010 - 17:22
I used the rock with Eyes n it as a cave, like leading to a dungeon with a great..uh...big...crab like...thing...living in it. But I'd think a giant Sandcastle would be a better dungeon, my friend says it should flood more and more as you descend deeper and deeper. The capabilities to a beach theme are quite vast and am looking forward to the final outcome. I'm hoping my beach design is worthy enough for a Beta key.

I post a quick reply and now it doesn't show...I've refreshed the page multiple times and still I can't see it.

What madness is this? A beach with Gobbal totems? And an offering. How strange. How long has this been here, and for what purpose? And why has nobody noticed it before? And why is it on a beach? One would think that Gobbals or Gobbal worship would happen someplace more grassy. It's all a big mystery really.

By Mister-Spoon 31.July.2010 - 14:47
ahha awesome! wink.gif

My guild use to adore the Great Gobbal at the the guild headquarter xD

Never give your password. To anybody. Not even forum staff, or Ankama staff - if they need access to your account they won't need you to tell them the password.

About Geo's problem, clear your browsers Cache.

But what does the stone say? Faska?
By Oamoka 03.August.2010 - 02:28
"Laska".
The whole map is full of reference for the Faux Rhum members.
Like the picture inside the ship is a reference to Kroc le Bô. (Aka ; Kroclegobe)
Or the blazonry of the Faux Rhum on the ship. :°)

And so more. (Where is Cool spot? :p)
