Wakfu vs. Stasis

I’m blushing all over!
Right, let’s be serious now, and get down to the business in hand. I’ve come to talk to you about recent developments and I know you’ve been waiting to hear about them for a while. We can’t wait to get your feedback as they’re subjects we care greatly about. As everything has to start somewhere, let’s start at the beginning.
At the heart of Wakfu there are areas where the flora and fauna flourishes more-or-less peacefully. We’d noticed that the edges of these areas were rather quiet. Sometimes they sheltered little heavens-on-earth, earthly paradises created in minute detail by the inhabitants of Astrub, where monsters could live their cushy lives, their numbers only reduced by the occasional raid organized by those very same Astrubians. Back in Astrub, the sound of the wind in the trees had been replaced by the cries of travelling merchants going about their business. They used the resources they’d harvested to craft various objects. Hmmm. I don’t think I’ve forgotten anything.
Yeah, so, all that is very nice, but what does it really change?
Er, what? Ah, the ecosystem! You’re a real bunch of geniuses, aren’t you? Yes, the ecosystem. It’s the ‘little jewel’ we hand over to you that you can do whatever you want with. But ultimately, when I want to scythe down a field, or plant a bunch of seeds, or chase a group of monsters, I don’t really appreciate the impact I’m having. I’ve already received an ear bashing for chopping down too many trees (thank you anti-insult filter ?). I have an order of 15 Bundles I need to deliver this evening and I know there’s no way I’ll be able to! But hold on, weren’t we talking about an ecoSYSTEM? Yes, and like all systems, it has rules. We all know rules are there to be respected, or better still, broken…
With harmony comes beauty !
Keep in mind that each environment zone will include an indication of the balance of its ecosystem. This indicator, visible next to the name of the area, will vary from green to brown, from perfectly balanced to total chaos, according to these three factors:
- The balance between groups of monsters
- The balance between groups of resources
- Environmental pollution

There's work to do to balance this area, but it could be worse…
To bring the species, animals and plants, into balance, you’ll need to pay attention to the gauges next to each group. The ‘W’ Wakfu symbol signifies balance. Two upward-pointing arrows next to Thistles, for example, means the area is full to bursting with thistles and they’re becoming intrusive. It’s possible to bring the area into balance by cutting down enough thistles, or hammer the final nail into the coffin by planting more thistles, and chop down all the remaining species while you’re at it if you need to make some room. Notice as well how the different environments change as you travel through them. Certain areas suit some species more than others. In the forest, for example, the presence of a huge field of wheat would completely destabilise the existing ecosystem! Later on, each area will be visible on a map, but I’m not going to tell you about how this map works, that’d be revealing too much! :p

It starts at first with a strange sensation and a feeling of power and it finishes with a complete understanding of your chosen inclination, be it Wakfu or Stasis. Of course, I’m here to tell you about the ecosystem, and I still haven’t told you the most important bit (you might notice I even managed to gloss over pollution, well done me!). Through your actions in balancing the ecosystem, you start on the long journey that might eventually lead to a daunting achievement - the complete understanding of and investment in Wakfu or Stasis. The more you undertake to bring an area into balance, the more your understanding of Wakfu will grow. Conversely, the more you work to destabilise an area, the more Stasis will flow through you. Your inclination will be represented by the Wakfu/Stasis gauge, the pointer swinging between the bewitching blue of Wakfu and the enigmatic purple of Stasis.

Before undertaking any action (harvest, combat , craft…) that could change the balance of an area and, as a direct result, your Wakfu/Stasis gauge, the consequences of your action will be shown : Wakfu, Stasis, or no consequence.

Your inclination is not only a representation of your actions, it’s a complete philosophy that will gradually begin to make sense and guide your future actions. Some refer to it as ‘alignment’, and it will soon become synonymous with good vibes, social adherence, and even political choice.
To correct a little ‘omission’: pollution.
If earlier on I managed to avoid the topic of pollution, it was because this post is already long, and talking about pollution would make it much, much longer ^^. All I can tell you at the moment is that machines for crafting pollute the environment, and using those machines increases the Stasis of the crafter. Using recycling machines rids the environment of pollution and draws the player back towards Wakfu.
I’ll stop there for the moment, but bear in mind we’ve got plenty of other ideas around how the levels of pollution could fluctuate. Likewise, to balance areas, we will inevitably talk about what governors can do, or the existence of a changing climate. Anyway, that brings us nicely onto something else…
Don’t worry! It’s not the end yet!
So, while I’m here I’m going to tell you a bit about what we’re developing at the moment (even if it is a little bit secret). From now on, I’m no longer going to argue the following points on the forums because they’re still open to big changes on our part. :p
The more you lean towards Wakfu, or towards Stasis, the more you will master them, and be able to develop special abilities as a result. You must unlock 2 levels in an inclination before you can unlock all the abilities in that inclination. Each level conveys 4 abilities. The last 4 abilities in each inclination are obviously the most powerful.
Each ability belongs to a certain category. The first category concerns monsters specifically. It will give you mastery over the families of monsters present in the ecosystem, to balance them, to reorganise them or to destabilise and tarnish them. The second category, still concerning the ecosystem, will split between creatures found in earthly paradises, and monumental destroyers of resources. The third category will allow you to specialize in the finer details of your inclination and will increase your Wakfu or your Stasis in every area that touches them. With the help of the fourth category, your combat skills will be optimised according to your inclination.
Pfft, I bet it doesn’t come for free !
Well, no. You’ll need a little bit of condensed Wakfu, Wakfu crystals, to trigger these powers. But that’s yet another enormous topic to discuss. All you need to know for the moment is that a sacrifice has to be made to trigger the powers, which should be used in moderation (especially the big ones ? :) ).
Remember as well that you can always move back and forth between Wakfu and Stasis to keep a certain balance. That might seem stupid given what I’ve just told you, but think a little about what could happen when other players can see you’re more (or less) inclined towards Wakfu or Stasis than they are. It’s also possible that the conduct of opposing players towards each other will render unstable those areas where Wakfu and Stasis are in total conflict. Of course, staying neutral also means staying free of those problems.
We hope that these powers, as well as being impressive, will on the one hand help the struggle towards balancing an area, and on the other hand address the challenges presented by PvP (see Zeorus’ post on the devblog) and running dungeons. Not only will you have the health of the entire ecosystem in your hands, but a strong advantage over other players. Initially the Wakfu/Stasis gauge will “only” allow you to use special, powerful objects. We will integrate these powers as soon as they are ready.
One final ‘little’ thing…
Above all else, I wanted this post to introduce you to the tools of your inclination as a Wakfu player. Now you’ve had time to digest all this information, I invite you to check out Daryl’s posts on the devblog to soak up the secrets of Wakfu and Stasis.
Beta test players will be able to see my new post about interfaces. To limit the number of bewildered souls I will be explaining the new layout, the improvements made to them and their new functionality. I just need a bit of time to sort it out, with Bouillie’s help.

I hate to say this but "Stasis" is a term which means effectively stability. Which is the complete opposite of the definition used in the blog, and actually the same thing as "wakfu's" definition.
Of course it's all rather ambiguous, with Wakfu (the game), Wakfu Points, and Wakfu (the "balance" concept).

It is nice to see a new devblog update about the game though, the system is starting to shape up, lets hope the closed beta tightens up the loose ends. I am intrigued.
Ok... so to put it simply: Is there a translation you think for Wakfu? Nope! So it stayed the same in french and english.
What i mean by that is that the problem being that in french, the word "stasis" does not exist! It does in english and greek though...

Anywho, on to business. First, I am loving the organization of the ''balance sheets''. After all, the balance between groups of monsters, the balance between groups of resources and the indication of the environmental pollution really is only feasible in a 'scale' fashion.
Now the balance between groups is something interesting to see when it comes to the Tofu only, or Gob only areas. Then does it come down to the subgroups (as in between say a Big Tofu and a Baby Tofu...thus if a Big Tofu is solely hunted then the scale gets skewed to chaos)?
Then we come to the groupings of resources. And, well, it is explained in the greatest detail so I don't have any question, just more of a comment. I can't even imagine the system you guys have put in place to enact something like that 'Thistle' example. After all, it seems very dynamic that one plant can overgrow the system and prevent the growing of other plants altogether. This in addition to the ecosystem balance in terms of area specificity is very admirable indeed.
Before delving on into 'pollution', first I want to ask one thing about the Wakfu/Stasis gauge. Now of all the things that are said of this gauge (as in the whole ''zen'' description that comes with doing what is right), is the only actual function of this bar to show our alignment towards either lawful or unlawful within the overworld? Now I do understand about the skills you will receive, etc. etc. But I just wish to know about the what level of the gauge between Wakfu and Chaos will the all-important PVP become active. After all, if the scale is all the way towards Stasis, then that seem like it is cutting it a little close due to the destruction that the person would have already done. Now this is me just blabbering for the sake of blabbering but if there is any sanity to what I just said, then feel free to explain the control system of players on players and the environment based on level. In addition, is it an absolute rule that if the resource turns 'brown/black' on the scale, they can never be brought back or is there an unmentioned skill given by having perfect Wakfu and the crystal as well to be able to bring them back (the best I saw so far is to ''balance or reorganize'' the ecosystem, not restore it. So do tell on this rather important point.
Oh and how can PVP render the area that is unstable into further chaos when the PVP is happening for the sole reason to restore the balance... unless ofcourse you are talking about certain kinds of PVP but the comment does not seem to point to this so yeeeeah.
And now pollution. First, I know it says that you guys have yet to fully explain it but I do have one question: With the first two types of environmental fluctuations (critters and crops), actions can be taken by other players to correct the overall environmental stability. But how is this to be done for pollution (other than the influence of the dynamic environment or the rule of the governor)? After all, if this is a direct result of crafting, then unless there is an 'anti-crafting' skill to reduce this negative influence, then the problem could get dire indeed.

And yes, the word does exist in greek. Actually, the franch word "stase" is based on it! But there doesn't appear to be the exact word "stasis".
And now I am wondering why i am saying all of that since i do tend to agree that the information from qii tend to say the correct explanation for the game... :/ Don't mind me, must have been on my "writing hour" or something like that!
Gold Down: hehe That is because we were having a discussion about it on the french side of the forum... and when I checked here it kindda wanted to take that direction so that is why I talked about it!
Don't worry, I didn't even think to check what Google.fr and fr.wikipedia.com would produce when "stasis" was put in until you'd said something. Which have definitions that at least show the thinking behind the blog-post's definition.
Edit for Zero: I just felt lazy.... didn't wanted to translate them if at least 1 person didn't seem interested!

Edit2 for Zero: Just check back to make sure you needed some info on the principle of the Wakfu/Stasis bar and it,s functionning.. yeah well... I did hate having to re-read your post higer-up... gets my brain dizzy!

Oh! Yeah right... I’ll avoid transalting all that is non-essential for time-saving purpose. And the quote is well… just to make it clear for the presentation more than anything….
Theorically, no. Dungeons are special place without ecosystem. That does imply that we will have to be carefulk about the equilibration, etc. Wich make me think that the use of your satchel is an exception. The satchel is also a special area without it’s ecosystem but wich allow you to use crafting machines. We will make it so that the action that you perform in your satchel affects in a way or another the surrounding areas.
(The next paragraph is gonna be somewhat challenging, i’ll translate it later if you don’t mind)
At the beginning, your bar will be set in the middle (« neutral , gray area ») Wich mean that you are in balance between the Wakfu and the Stasis not meaning that you are currently going for the balance in an area since the two « balance » are completly different thing and are not complementary!
Pollution is, and I insist on it, only Stasis because it is the result of the player using something natural to make something artificial wich isn’t included in a natural cycle. For those of you asking, recycling allow you to destroy crafted objet to cleanse it and will give you something back for doing so.
You must remember that the Wakfu/Stasis bar will have a slow evolution wich will be proportional to the consequence of your action. Meaning that it’s not by crafting some object that you will end up being a complete Stasis player or by regulating the onster of one area that you will end up being SuperWakfuMan! (Yeah, he did say super WakfuMan!
Now, about the neutral character, we will try to balance everything accordingly (not in accordance with the evolution bar) so that each way of playing (either being on the side of the Wakfu, the Stasis, or dead in the middle as Neutral) will be playable and fun to do so!
That is all for now! Do take in mind that those are not quite definitive and may change as long as it is in devlopment!
Yeah well… if you are wondering about the last paragraph, it is simply beacause they want people to feel fre not to choose to be on the Wakfu side or the Stasis side. so they are thinking way to compensate so that a Stasis player, for exemple, won’t automatically overpower a Neutral caracter.
Feel free to ask question, I am not a dev, but if i can find an answer or explain it otherwise, I’ll do so!

Honestly, to attain the one of the extremity of the Wakfu/Stasis bar will surely be a goal by itself but, in my opinion, that will be far from saying that the Wakfu/Stasis action of a player are over. That is without counting on the fact that this functionality is also conncted to the PvP and the politic. For exemple, depending on the governor, I am sure that some player who have already reach their maximum on their evolution bar (Yeah… i,ll name it like that for now, it,s getting pretty tiresome always writing the Wakfu/Stasis bar…. So take into account that when I say the maximum of the evolution bar, it means on either side.) will have to continue confirming that position so as not to loose their bonus to the balance (unbalance) wanted by the governor.
ElfShadow : What happen if I introduce a new plant in an area ecosystem?
Adding a plant in an area ecosystem wich does not already contai nit will only ad dit to it’s appropriate category : trees / plants / crops (Well… not sure for the last one how they will translate it, but that would happened to be where you’ll find wheat, barley, oats, etc.). That is why, for exemple, adding an hazelnut tree in a forest of ash will only influence the category trees. That is not the case for monster since they are split by family and introducing a new family might be possible.Thing is, the work on that is not finished, so I wouldn,t be able to confirm that last point right now.
For those of you wondering about the trees / plants / crops you must refer yourself to the picture:

So, since the arrow is pointing down, meaning it is missing trees in the area, even in a forest of ash you can put some hazelnut tree to re-equilibrate the area.

I don't especially understand that statement in regards to what you do "in your satchel" but this could just be another way of saying what people would do in the environment. If not, please feel free to correct me.

Well now this answers my question about pollution. Only I am wondering how to recycle. I figure it means to reuse the same object to make yet another object but that would still be using some resources for this purpose now wouldn't it.

lol yes, SuperWakfuMan is an awesome comment. And I am glad that they are making it a rather challenging thing to get to either end of the spectrum. After all, I would not want to get to Stasis just due to a lapse in judgment of what I am leveling/equipment farming on and neither do I wish to be fully 'Wakfud' just by maintaining balance. This gives something else to work for in addition to just the pure character leveling concept.

Oh, this is certainly a new piece of info that I didn't expect. I figured putting a hazelnut tree in a forest of ash would mess with the environmental stability (from the game's perspective) but it seems that the devs thought the opposite. I figure it then all has to do with moderation. So planting several hazelnut trees would destabilize the system but one is not altogether significant. This is just a guess though.
Recycling seems to be breaking crafted objects back into their component parts or ingredients.
As for hazelnut trees in an ash forest, it looks like "a tree is just a tree." Having more complex ecosystems would be awesome but time consuming to develop as they would have to track individual ecosystems. So any tree can raise the Tree category, any crop can raise the Crop category, any plant can raise the Plant category.
Ah well! I am here for the bad news only anyway!
I don't know when you'll have the official translation of the devblog article (Yeah, I won't translate that much sorry!
Basically, the closed Beta will be re-schedule at an ulterior date... And no, we didn't had any clue whatsoever except for the fact that people are going to be able to test 1 of the dungeon at the AC4.
As for the land, the next Beta (v2) is going to be Emelka as the starting point and 4 smaller island (I am saying smaller but it might not be the case, haven't seen them!
And actually opening everything would mean also opening up Astrub and surrounding, Bonta and surrounding and Brakmar and surrounding.... etc. I think you get my idea....
One way or another, they will have to put up mor than 1 region for the Final version beauce of the politics (with no clue as to when they are gonna test that one) wich make you in "obligation" to choose a country upon character creation.

Not sure about being rewarded for shaking up the ecosystem though, say my main focus for leveling was a certain monster, and that population was low so im a good boy and dont kill any of that type. But someone else comes along and just kills them. They win in everyway, Exp, Stasis rewards etc. Same for gathering/farming. Maybe i misread it, but yeah if it works like this, bad times.
On a side note, if there is the same problem with kama farmers, as there is on dofus. Does this mean there wont be anything left in the f2p area.
